한국관광공사의 축제미술관(Fest Art Museum)은 축제와 예술이 만나는 공간으로, 대한민국을 대표하는 현대미술 아티스트가 우리나라 고유의 지역축제를 재해석한 전시를 선보입니다. 축제미술관의 두 번째 특별전인 「화가의 옷 – 축제(The Costume of Painter – Festival)」에서는 자연과 생태자원을 활용한 문화관광축제 - ‘담양대나무축제’, ‘시흥갯골축제’, ‘정남진장흥물축제’, ‘함평나비대축제’가 배준성 작가만의 시선 및 그만의 회화 기법으로 구현한 하나의 특별 커미션 작품으로 표현되었습니다.
아티스트 배준성은 작품을 보는 각도에 따라 이미지가 변하는 ‘렌티큘러 회화의 선구자’로, 세계 3대 아트페어인 영국 프리즈 아트페어(Frieze London), 스위스 아트바젤(Art Basel), 프랑스 피악 아트페어(FIAC)에서 각광받은 대한민국 대표 아트페어 1세대로 불리는 현대미술 아티스트입니다.
그의 대표 연작 <화가의 옷(The Costume of Painter)>은 인물이나 정물 사진 위에 투명한 비닐을 덮고 그 위에 물감으로 덧칠을 하는 초기 작업으로부터 시작되었습니다. 작가는 고전 명화 속 모델의 의복, 일상 속 정물 그리고 배경을 현재의 공간에 배치하여, 특정 소재에 대해 새로운 의미를 부여합니다. 최근 작품에는 미술관이나 작업실에서 어린 소녀가 동물과 식물을 순수한 시선으로 바라보는데, 이는 자연과 생태 속에서 인간과 동식물의 공존의 중요성을 의미하기도 합니다. 이러한 작가의 연작은, 시시각각 변화하는 한국의 아름다운 풍경이 혼합된 이미지인 ‘화가의 옷’을 입은 네 가지 축제로 생경하게 구현됩니다.
네 가지 문화관광축제는 작품 속에서 각각 하나의 작은 프레임으로 표현되어 공간적 한계를 초월한 동시성을 담아냅니다. 파릇한 봄과 겨울 설경의 상반되는 계절 속에서 돋보이는 죽녹원의 대나무가 묘사된 ‘담양대나무축제’, 형형색색의 나비들의 율동감이 표현된 ‘함평나비대축제’의 함평 엑스포 공원 꽃밭, 노을 빛이 내려 앉은 핑크뮬리 절경이 신비로운 ‘시흥갯골축제’의 생태공원, ‘정남진장흥물축제’는 청정 자연인 장흥댐 호수의 고요하고 푸른빛이 표현되었습니다.
작가는 이처럼 대한민국을 대표하는 문화관광축제의 본질을 새로운 시각을 통해 접근하고 조화하여 축제의 새로움과 함께 지속 가능한 자연과 생태의 중요성을 전하고자 합니다. 문화체육관광부 및 한국관광공사 지정 문화관광축제는 지역의 특산물, 전통문화·민속, 관광자원 등 다양한 소재로 지역 관광 및 경제 발전에 이바지하였으며, 대한민국 대표 축제를 넘어 세계적인 축제로 성장과 발전을 도모하고 있습니다.
Festival : Dressed in “The Costume of Painter”
A space where Festival meets Art, the Fest Art Museum of the Korea Tourism Organization showcases special exhibition of artwork by Korea’s leading contemporary artists reinterpreting the country’s unique regional festivals. Fest Art Museum proudly presents the 2nd special exhibition 「The Costume of Painter – Festival」, a special commissioned artwork by the artist Bae Joon Sung. Bae has articulated his own interpretation of Korea’s Culture and Tourism Festivals such as “Damyang Bamboo Festival,” “Siheung Gaetgol Festival,” “Jeongnamjin Jangheung Water Festival,” and “Hampyeong Butterfly Festival,” the festivals that tap into the ecology and natural resources of their regions through his painting techniques.
Bae is seen as “the pioneer of lenticular painting” the visual imagery of his work changes from different angles of view. Bae is the forerunner contemporary artist of Korea's art fair, who is highly praised at the world’s three major art fairs: Frieze London (UK), Art Basel (Switzerland), and FIAC (France).
Bae’s representative series <The Costume of Painter> began by covering a portrait or image of still life with transparent vinyl and overlay it with paint. The artist then places the model’s clothing in classic paintings, still life from everyday life, and their backgrounds into the current moment and space, giving new attribution of meaning to particular medium. In his recent work, a young girl looks at the animals and plants with a pure gaze at an art gallery or studio, which calls the attention to the importance of coexistence between humans, animals and plants in nature and ecology. The artwork series is distinctly embodies the four festivals wearing “The Costume of Painter” as a blended imagery of the ever-changing beautiful scenery of Korea.
The four Culture and Tourism Festivals are each represented in a small frame in the artwork, capturing simultaneity that transcends spatial limitations: “Damyang Bamboo Festival” depicts bamboo trees in Juknokwon, which stand out with a contrast from seasons of the green spring and the snowy winter; “Hampyeong Butterfly Festival” in Hampyeong Expo Park’s flower fields features the rhythmical movement of colorful butterflies; “Siheung Gaetgol Festival” in Siheung Gaetgol Eco Park boasts the mystical scenery of pink muhly in the sunset light; and “Jeongnamjin Jangheung Water Festival” expresses the calmness and the pristine blue light of the Jangheung Dam Lake.
Bae Joon Sung approaches the essence of Korea’s Culture and Tourism Festivals through a new perspective and pursues harmony to convey the importance of sustainable nature and ecology as well as the novelty of the festivals. Culture and Tourism Festivals designated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization have contributed to the development of regional tourism and economies by tapping into abundant resources such as local specialties, traditional culture and folklore, and tourist attractions. Earnest efforts are being made to develop them into global festivals beyond Korea's representative festivals.
