Seoul Summer Songs  |

Seoul Summer Songs  |  A Summer Garden Where We Meet the Ones We've Lost

Standing in front of Adam Handler’s works, one almost seems to hear music. The yellows, blues, pinks, and greens captivate viewers like the melody of a summer song. The large tulips stand at the center of the canvas less as flowers than as faces. Childlike figures look straight at us, and the ghosts on the wall drift by not as specters of death, but as happy memories. Seoul Summer Songs, presented by The Trinity Gallery, is precisely this summer song woven from flowers, faces, and ghosts. It is bright and cheerful yet never trivial, a song for those who, even after experiencing loss, do not give up on the beauty of life. Adam Handler’s painterly world is closer to the directness of emotion than to traditional representation. Born in Queens, New York, and trained in art in Italy and New York, his painting turns not to a display of technique but back to primal lines and colors. As critics have described his work as a “naive chaos” that holds feelings of loneliness and imagination, solitude and connection, his paintings may appear clumsy yet are powerful, and seem simple yet contain deep stories. This exhibition brings together three key series that form his world. First, the figures in Figure Works are the central beings of Handler’s painting. Rather than portraits of specific individuals, they are inner characters the artist has built up repeatedly over time. The images of large eyes and square faces, said to have been inspired by the big, beautiful eyes of his wife, are often referred to as “girls,” not so much to stress gender as to convey childlike sensitivity, purity, and playfulness, while also giving shape to the subject of emotion. The second is Ghosts. Handler’s ghost is an emblematic image of his world, but it is never an object of fear. In this exhibition, the ghosts appear as reliefs in the form of shaped wooden panels, positioned between painting and object, surface and space. The pink ghosts floating on the wall look as if they have stepped out into the exhibition hall. This image, which began in his anxiety about death, has over time shifted into an awareness that “life should not be taken for granted,” a realization that “life is a gift.” Thus his ghosts are forms that recall those we have lost, and at the same time beings that comfort the living. The third is Flowers and Gardens, especially the Tulip Series that suits this June exhibition in Seoul. Handler’s tulips are not botanically detailed plants. A flower standing alone in the center of the canvas on a single stem, petals rising like a crown, roughly pushed paint and scratched, peeled surfaces, these are less decorative still lifes than emotional personae. Here the flower is both a symbol of beauty and a heart that blooms again even after loss. If the ghosts are the faces of those who have vanished, the tulips are the memories that blossom in the places they left behind. If the figures in Figure Works are the ones who live on carrying those memories, then the garden is the inner place where they can briefly rest. In the beautiful June of Seoul, The Trinity Gallery, through Seoul Summer Songs, unfolds Adam Handler’s gentle yet profound world of consolation, in which tulips and gardens, summer colors, Figure Works, and ghosts extended into relief all come together.
