The Square Frame Incubates the Object (Relief)

‘릴리프(Relief)’는 조각에서 평평한 면 위에 글자나 형상을 도드라지게 새겨 표현하는 기법을 의미한다. 권오상 작가의 〈릴리프〉 연작은 잡지 광고와 인터넷에서 검색한 이미지를 자작나무 판에 인쇄한 뒤, CNC 장비로 정밀하게 오려내어 겹겹이 배치함으로써 완성되는 평면 조각 작업이다. 이 작업은 전통적인 조각처럼 360도 감상 가능한 완전한 입체 조형이 아니라, 벽에 밀착된 부조 형식을 취함으로써 회화와 조각의 경계에 위치한다. 책이나 음식과 같은 일상의 사물에서부터 보석, 손목시계, 슈퍼카에 이르기까지 현대 소비사회를 상징하는 화려한 이미지들이 하나의 프레임 안에서 겹치고 맞물리며, 레이어 사이의 단차와 절단면이 시각적 입체감을 형성한다. 이를 통해 작가는 이미지의 중첩만으로도 조각적인 깊이가 발생할 수 있음을 제시하며, 나아가 우리가 입체라 믿는 세계 역시 수많은 얇은 이미지 층이 겹쳐진 결과일 수 있지 않은가라는 질문을 던진다.

‘Relief’ is a sculptural technique where letters or forms are raised or carved so they stand out from a flat surface. In Gwon Osang’s 〈Relief〉 series, images found in magazine ads and online searches are printed onto wood panels, then precisely cut out with CNC equipment and layered one over another to form a “flat sculpture.” Unlike traditional sculpture designed to be viewed from all angles, these artworks take the form of wall-mounted relief, sitting on the border between painting and sculpture. Within a single frame, glossy images that symbolize contemporary consumer culture, from everyday objects like books and food to jewelry, watches, and supercars, overlap and interlock. The steps between layers and the exposed cut edges create a sense of depth. Through this process, the artist suggests that sculptural space can emerge from layered images alone and asks a bigger question: what if the three-dimensional world we believe in is also the result of countless thin layers of images stacked together?
