더 트리니티 갤러리는 2018년 무술년 황금개띠 해, 지난 20년동안 개를 주인공으로 전통 민화에 현대적 풍자를 더해온 곽수연 작가의 전시 ‘부귀영화’전을 개최한다. 궁중에서 시작해서 민간으로까지 널리 행해졌던 세화풍습의 의미를 담아 2018년도의 시작을 알리는 절기 봄을 맞이해서 일과 가정의 안녕과 평안을 기원하는 취지이다. 우리 조상들은 질병이나 재난 등의 불행을 사전에 막고 한 해 동안 복이 깃들기를 기원하기 위해 세시 풍속의 하나로 세화를 주고받았다. 현재 우리들도 새해가 되면 매해를 상징하는 동물의 여러 가지 의미를 찾는다. 연하장에는 어김없이 새해를 상징하는 십이지신 동물이 힘찬 자태로 희망찬 새해를 알린다. 2018년 무술년 황금 개띠의 해가 주는 의미는 조금 더 특별하다. ‘개’는 충직을 상징하며 사람과 가장 친근한 동물로 손꼽히는데, ‘반려견’은 그 이상이다. ‘반려동물’이란 사람과 함께 더불어 살아가며 심리적으로 안정감과 친밀감을 주는 친구, 가족과 같은 존재를 뜻하기 때문이다. 작품 속 낙원, 무릉도원은 동서고금을 막론하고 인간이 갈구하는 환상의 장소가 된다. 개에게 이끌려서 보이는 인간의 유토피아적 세계다. 무술년을 맞이해 어느 때보다 복이 깃든 곽수연의 ‘개’를 통해 황금빛 긍정 에너지를 가득 담아가기를 바란다.
